Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do I need a concealed carry permit to join Second Call Defense?
No. You do not need a CCW permit to become a member. Second Call Defense is available to anyone legally eligible to own or carry a weapon, regardless of permit status.
2. What does Second Call Defense cover?
Second Call Defense provides immediate, up-front legal protection after a self-defense incident. Depending on your membership level, benefits may include:
- Unlimited criminal and civil defense coverage
- Up to $1,000,000 in civil suit damages protection
- Up to $300,000 in accidental shooting protection
- 24/7 emergency legal hotline
- Immediate attorney retainer and bail bond support
- Access to training materials, legal resources, and more
All legal fees are paid directly to your attorney—no out-of-pocket costs, no reimbursements, and nothing to repay.
3. What types of weapons are covered?
All legal weapons are covered, including handguns, rifles, shotguns, knives, and even improvised weapons like tools or your hands. If you use any legal weapon in self-defense, your membership applies.
4. Will my homeowners or umbrella insurance cover me in a self-defense incident?
No. Most homeowners and umbrella liability policies exclude coverage for intentional acts, including self-defense. Even if your policy includes a “reasonable force” exception, legal defense costs are typically not covered.
5. Can I still be charged or sued even if I act in legal self-defense?
Yes. Even if you act lawfully, you may still face criminal charges or civil lawsuits. Prosecutors may seek convictions for political or personal reasons, and civil suits can be filed by the attacker or their family. Second Call Defense protects you in both criminal and civil proceedings.
6. What is the difference between CCW insurance and a legal defense membership?
So-called “CCW insurance” is often a prepaid legal defense plan. Unlike traditional insurance, Second Call Defense provides immediate legal assistance and pays your defense costs up front, without reimbursement requirements.
7. What happens if I use force in self-defense?
After calling 911, your second call should be to Second Call Defense. You’ll have immediate access to an attorney via our 24/7 emergency legal hotline. We provide legal guidance, retain a local attorney, post bail if necessary, and cover your legal fees throughout the process.
8. Are there any states where coverage is not available?
Yes. Due to state regulations, Second Call Defense is currently not available in New York, New Jersey, and Washington.
9. How do I access the Member Portal?
